The Guiding Principles of Lobo Football: Champions Do Extra

Champions Do Extra.  The minimum can be done by anyone.  But to be a champion, it just takes more.  Edge coach Jan Jorgensen, who has not only played and coached under Bronco Mendenhall but also had an MMA career, has this as his favorite principle.

“It’s how I was raised,” said Jorgensen.  “My dad was a coach, he coached college football.  It’s one thing he always instilled and preached that if you want to be the best, you have to do more.”

It’s true.  If your opponent is doing more, and working harder than you, the odds will not be favorable for you.  But if you are the one putting in the extra reps, the extra film study, the extra work, you are closer to a championship.  Because champions do more, and championship football is what Bronco Mendenhall is bringing to UNM.

The definition of “extra” is this, “added to an existing or usual amount or number; additional.”

That’s what champions do.  You take the usual amount of work, and the do more.  You do additional, and you don’t cut corners … you just do it.  Receivers coach Micah Simon understands the sacrifice that doing extra means, but the reward that comes with it.

“It’s a lot of taxing work,” said Simon, “But extra can cover a wide variety of things and I like to drill that to my position group.”  T

The great thing is Champions Do Extra isn’t just a football thing.  Want to be a champion at work?  Do more than the others.  Be a champion in school? Do the extra studying.  Champions Do Extra is for the football field, but it’s a guiding principle that can have impact off the field as well.

A theme of the full slate of guiding principles as Bronco Mendenhall and staff work to build a total program.
