The Guiding Principles of Lobo Football: Will Before Skill

WIll Before Skill. It’s a principle that makes complete sense … and we have all seen it.  That athlete that has a little more drive, a little more pep, an athlete that is willing to work harder than anyone else.  As offensive coordinator Jason Beck says “How hard you work, no matter the talent you have, you will always make the most out of it.”

It’s a principle that works in football, but hopefully as the Guiding Principles of Lobo Football have been rolled out and presented, fans are starting to see while these principle apply to football, they apply beyond football.  It’s what Bronco Mendenhall has been installing from Day One at UNM.

Famika Anae has lived Will Before Skill.  He lives it now as a coach on Bronco Mendenhall’s staff, and he lived it as a player at BYU.  He lived it in his previous coaching stops where he was not on Mendenhall’s staff.  He knowns the skill is crucial, but if your will is not more than your opponent, there’s only so far skill will take you.  It’s how underdogs win.  It’s how when there are two evenly matched teams and one pulls it out late, there’s a quiet confidence.  Will Before Skill.
