Lobos Complete Bruin Wave in Fifth

SOMIS, Calif. — After a rainy day on the course, the University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished fifth in a field of 15 strong squads at the Bruin Wave Invitational on Wednesday. After posting the tournament’s second lowest score of all teams across all rounds in round two (303), the Lobos closed round three with a score of 322 through tough conditions to drop in the standings.

No. 10 Arizona State (915, +51) and No. 17 Northwestern (929, +65) claimed the top spots, followed by Oregon (931, +67), Pepperdine (935, +71) and UNM (938, +74).

“This team showed just how tough they are these past three days at the Bruin Wave,” head coach Jill Trujillo said. “The Saticoy Club is probably one of the most difficult golf courses we’ve ever played.

Add in three days of wind and some rain today and I think we hung right in there with some of the best teams in the country. This Lobo squad is moving in the right direction and I’m excited for the rest of our season!”

Sophomore Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana finished tied for ninth overall with a score of 231 (+15). She carded a 75 in round one followed by a 73 in round two before posting an 83 in the final round.

Lertsadwattana tied for second overall in birdies with 10 while also ranking in the top eight in par-3 scoring (3.17, +2) and in par-4 scoring (4.37, +11).

Freshman Myah McDonald registered a career-best 12th-place finish shooting a 79, 73 and 80 across the three rounds for a final total of 232 (+16). The freshman registered six birdies (tied for 13th) while tying for 10th overall in pars with 31. Additionally, McDonald ranked tied for fourth in par-3 scoring (3.08, +1) and tied for 13th in par-4 scoring (4.40, +12).

Senior Caroline Jansson was extremely consistent on the tournament, shooting a 79 in all three rounds for a final score of 237 (+21), good to tie for 19th overall.

Sophomore Lauren Lehigh finished tied for 28th with a score of 238 (+22), marking the fourth Lobo to finish in the top 30. Despite the inclement weather in round three, she remained consistent across the three rounds, posting scores of 80, 78 and 80.

Redshirt-senior Reva Morris rounded out the Lobo five, shooting 85, 79 and 87 on the week for a final score of 251 (+35).

New Mexico has just five days to rest before heading back on the road to Tucson for the Arizona Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona. The two-day tournament is set to start March 8 at the Sewailo Golf Course.
