Famika Anae

Famika Anae joined the Lobo Football program in December of 2023, and he serves as the offensive line coach for UNM. He comes to New Mexico after a two-year stint at Campbell.

Overall, Anae has coached in the collegiate ranks for 10 seasons over five schools.

The 2024 season will be his sixth working with Mendenhall.

PREVIOUS COACHING STOPS

CAMPBELL (2022-23): Anae served as the offensive line coach for the Campbell Camels for two seasons, helping oversee the transition from the Big South Conference to the CAA. In his second season at Campbell, Anae coached a pair of All-CAA honorees as Mike Edwards earned First Team All-CAA at offensive tackle, and his bookend counterpart Tyler McLellan was a third-team pick.

Edwards was a two-time First Team pick under Anae, and he was also an All-American in 2022 when they were members of the Big South. McLellan, meanwhile, was a four-time all-conference honoree (first, second or third team included) after the graduate student started all 11 games of the season in 2023 at right tackle.

The duo helped push Campbell to over 400 yards of total offense six times, including 613 yards in a 56-7 win at The Citadel, the third most ever in a single game and a school record against an NCAA Division I opponent.

Campbell’s offensive line ranked No. 2 in the FCS in pass blocking efficiency (93.2), according to PFF. The CU offense also lead the CAA and finished fifth nationally in pass completion percentage (.702), 10th in first down offense (250), 15th in third down conversion percentage (.454), and 17th overall team passing efficiency (150.84).

TEXAS A&M COMMERCE (2019-21): Anae spent three seasons with the Lions, coaching the offensive line at Texas A&M Commerce from 2019 to 2021. At Commerce, Anae helped guide the Lions to 18 wins over his final two seasons, also coaching three All-Lone Star Conference linemen. In 2021, the offensive line unit made way for an offense that gained 3,580 total yards and allowed less than two sacks per game.

Tackle Amon Simon earned All-American honors for the second time in Anae’s tenure in 2021, and he was also named to D2Football’s Elite 100 team while registering Second Team Region IV, and First Team All-LSC accolades. Center Christian Hernandez was also named Second Team All-LSC.

In 2019, the Lions advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional final, going 11-3 and earning a No. 11 finish in the final American Football Coaches’ Association rankings of the season. Simon was named to two All-American teams and was the LSC’s Offensive Lineman of the Year, guard Deion Malone was named All-Region and First Team All-LSC, and Hernandez was named honorable mention All-LSC.

DIXIE STATE (now Utah Tech, 2018): Anae spent one full season with Dixie State in his first true full-time role as a lead position coach, coaching tight ends and serving as video coordinator. With DSU, the Trailblazers went 7-4 in his one season.

Trailblazer tight ends caught 19 passes during the season for 194 yards and a touchdown and they helped block for an offense that rushed for 1,486 yards and threw for 3,558 yards and scoring an average of 31.1 points per game.

VIRGINIA (2016-18): Anae spent three seasons with Bronco Mendenhall on the Cavalier staff as an assistant offensive line coach under Garrett Tujague. His father Robert was the offensive coordinator as well.

BYU (2014-15):  Anae spent two seasons with Bronco Mendenhall on the Cougar staff as an assistant offensive line coach under Garrett Tujague. His father Robert was the offensive coordinator as well.

PLAYING CAREER: BYU (2011-12):  As a player, Anae played offensive line at BYU from 2011- 12 before injuries ended his career after his sophomore season.

Anae was a starter as a sophomore, earning All-Independent honors. He also earned the All-Tradition Award, the Spirit Award, and he was inducted to the 2012 Honor Team.

Anae earned his bachelor’s degree in history from BYU in 2014. He is married to Tessi Leila Tolutau, and they have four children Liane, Savani, Fiaali’i, and Litiavava’u.
