Charles Mack joined the Lobo Football program in December of 2023, and he serves as the defensive backs coach for UNM.  He comes to New Mexico after a one-year stint at VMI.

Mack has been in the coaching profession for six years, and he also has spent time on the administrative side of college athletics, giving him a unique perspective into the coaching profession as he spent time  as an event management assistant (Georgia, 2018) and as an assistant director of facilities and event management and gameday operations (Richmond, 2017).

The 2024 season will be his 4th working with Mendenhall.

PREVIOUS COACHING STOPS

VMI (2023)

Mack spent one year at Virginia Military Institute serving as safeties coach and director of player of personnel.

In 2023 with VMI, Mack coached Josh Knapp to a career season with 87 tackles, two sacks, three PBUs, and two fumble recoveries, and Evan Eller to Second Team All-SoCon honors after a team-high 107 tackles, two forced fumbles, and an interception.

VIRGINIA (2019-2023)

Mack got his coaching career off the ground in with four years on the staff at Virginia, three of which were with Bronco Mendenhall.  He began his career in 2019 as a regional scout, where he was instrumental in the recruiting efforts for the Cavaliers.  He then moved into a graduate assistant coaching position, working with the offense in 2020 and 2021 before moving over to the defense in 2022.

While with the Cavs, Virginia was bowl eligible all three seasons, including a trip to the Orange Bowl.

PLAYING CAREER: Richmond (2013-17)

As a player, Mack played for four years at Richmond, where he played in 45 career games for the Spiders.  Overall he recorded 59 career tackles, six PBUs, an interception two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.  His senior year he helped lead the Spiders into the FCS Quarterfinals, including a career-high eight tackles in a second-round win over North Dakota.  Richmond also made the FCS playoffs in 2014 and 2015, including a semifinal appearance in 2015.

Mack earned bachelor’s degree in leadership studies and sociology from Richmond in 2017, and he earned a master’s in social and philosophical foundations from UVA in 2021.  He is married to the former Carley Wilson and they have a son, Wesley.
