DeAndre Wright, a former Lobo great who was a Freshman All-American, has officially rejoined the Lobo Family as a graduate assistant coach, working with the Lobo defense. Wright has served as a volunteer assistant for the past few years, working with the program’s corners and safeties.

Wright will be handling practice planning, film breakdown and on-the-field coaching. He also aids with statistical analysis and film preparation.

Wright was named Freshman All-America by the FWAA in 2005, he was a three-time All-Mountain West selection, earning second team honors in 2006 and 2008 and first team honors in 2007. He was also a finalist in 2008 for both the Nagurski Award and the Thorpe Award.

He started the final 41 games of his career, and he started 43 of the 48 games that he played in. At the time of his career at UNM ending, he was sixth in school history with 25 passes broken up, and he finished with 10 interceptions, 159 tackles, and 10.5 tackles for loss. He also was a superb return man, leading the Mountain West in kickoff return average at 25.9 yards per return in 2006.

He eventually was drafted by the New York Giants in 2009. He also played with Minnesota Vikings and the Cleveland Browns.

He later played indoor football with both the New Mexico Stars and the Duke City Gladiators.

He graduated with a degree in liberal arts in 2008 from New Mexico. Wright’s young son Cameron is a regular at Lobo practices, helping with equipment, chasing down footballs and cheering on the players.
