NEW MEXICO: A walk-on quarterback whose presence has been valuable to a depleted roster at the quarterback position in 2012 and 2013 … persistence was rewarded with playing time in 2013 …suffered a foot injury in the season finale against Boise State that forced him to miss spring practice in 2014 … has natural play-making instincts and his confidence rubs off on his teammates … experience will help the younger quarterbacks in the fall.
2013: Appeared in five games … completed 6 of 13 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown … also ran the ball 20 times for 117 yards for an average of 5.8 yards per carry … threw a key 23-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Bundy against Wyoming that pulled UNM within a single score with a minute left in the game; the Lobos’ onside kick failed, and Vega didn’t get a second chance to score … had a career-high 47 rushing yards on seven carries with a long of 31 against Utah State.
NEW MEXICO MILITARY: Set a schoole school record with 2,829 passing yards in 2010 with 22 TDs and 13 interceptions in 2010 … threw for 2,819 yards with 28 TDs and 12 interceptions in 2011 … earned second-team All-Western States Football League honors.
HIGH SCHOOL: Won two New Mexico 4A state championships in 2008 and 2009 and was an All-State quarterback at Goddard High School.
PERSONAL: Born Dec. 30, 1991 in Roswell, N.M…son of Silviana and Joaquin Vega…has four sisters: Ana, Elisabeth, Monica and Marisol…three brothers: Jacob, Eric, Joaquin Jr.
