Will Asby Named MW Player of the Week

by Connor Gilbert

After leading the Lobos in nearly every offensive category as they swept a three-game Mountain West road series San Diego State last weekend, New Mexico Outfielder Will Aasby has been named Mountain West Player of the Week for the second time in his career, the league announced Monday.

It’s the sixth conference weekly award of the year for UNM and the fourth different Player of the Week award for a Lobo this year along with Josh McAlister (April 21), Jordy Oriach (Feb. 24, March 3) and Tye Wood (April 15) – Cooper Brass has also earned MW Freshman of the Week honors this season (Feb. 17). Asby was named MW POTW once in the 2024 season before wrapping up the year with All-MW honors.

With their fourth straight Mountain West series win and seventh victory in their last eight games, the Lobos (28-18, 15-9 MW) moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain West standings with six games to play. The series win also extended UNM’s winning streak over SDSU to six games – its longest since 2011-12.

Asby led the Lobos in batting .615 (8-for-13), on-base percentage (.706) and slugging (1.231) as they won all three of their games at Tony Gwynn Stadium, also driving in a team-high 9 RBI on 5 extra-base hits (3B, HR, 2B x3), drawing four walks to two strikeouts over the weekend. He recorded a hit and multiple RBI in every game of the series, while reaching base safely in 12 of his 18 plate appearances, playing error-free defense across all three games in right field with six putouts in total.

In Sunday’s series finale, the grad senior delivered a career-best 5-hit performance (5-for-5, HR, 2B, 4 RBI, 3 R) – the most hits in a single game by a Lobo this year – and scored or drove in a run in three different innings as the Lobos rallied from down 5-1 to complete the sweep. He also drove in three runs in Friday’s series opener despite just one hit (1-for-4, 2 BB), including a key two-RBI single in the top of the 10th inning as UNM fought off the Aztecs in extra innings.
