By the Numbers: New Mexico at Colorado State

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As New Mexico gets ready to Fort Collins, Colorado to take on the Colorado State Rams in a Homecoming matchup at Canvas Stadium, here 10 numbers to get you ready for the game.  The game kicks off at the 3:02 pm on Saturday, October 26 in Fort Collins.

1 – That’s the number of quarterbacks in Mountain West history to have thrown for 1,500 yards and rushed for 10 touchdowns over the first seven games of a season.  The only quarterback that has ever done it is UNM’s Devon Dampier, who has thrown for 1,760 yards and 10 touchdowns.

3 – That’s the number of times this season that the Lobos have played in a game with at least 90 combined points.  This year UNM has played in games with 90 combined points (New Mexico 50, New Mexico State 40), 95 (New Mexico 52, Air Force 37), and 100 points (Arizona 61, New Mexico 39).

4 – That’s the number of two-point conversions made by New Mexico, which is tied with Oklahoma State, tied for the most in the country.  UNM has also attempted seven two-pointers, also tied with Oklahoma State.

12 – That’s the number of consecutive wins in the series for Colorado State, which is the longest streak for either team in the series.  The last three times UNM has won, it has been on a walk-off field goal (2006), a field goal with 12 seconds left (2007) and another walk-off field goal (2009).

25 – That’s the number of wins UNM has against Colorado State, which is the fourth-most wins for UNM against any program.  The teams will be meeting for the 70th time, and that’s also the fourth-most games for UNM against any one opponent.

37 – That’s the number of pass breakups for Colorado State, which is tied with Alabama for the third-most in the FBS this season, behind only Mississippi (41) and Pittsburgh (38)

37.4  – That’s the points per game for UNM this season, a total that would be the best total in program history ahead of the 2016 team that averaged 36.7 points per game.

73 – That’s the number of seconds that UNM led in the game against Utah State, scoring the winning touchdown on a 12-yard run by Eli Sanders with 1:13 to go.  It was UNM’s only lead of the game.

116 – That’s the number of points responsible for by Lobo quarterback Devon Dampier, who has rushed for 10 touchdowns (60), thrown for nine (54) and also thrown for a two-point conversion (2).  The 116 points ranks 15th nationally among all FBS players.

5,474 – The amount of days since UNM’s last blocked punt, the longest skid in the FBS.  UNM last blocked a punt on October 31, 2009.  Hyrum McCarter, the youngest player on the Lobo roster, was just three years old when that happened.
