By the Numbers: New Mexico at Utah State

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As New Mexico gets ready to Logan, Utah to take ont he Aggies from Utah State, here 10 number to get you ready for the game.  The game kicks off at the 2:05 pm on Saturday, October 19 in Logan.

2 – That’s the number of punt returns for touchdowns that Luke Wysong has in his career, and he is one of seven active players to have two or more.  Wysong actually had a third in 2022, but it was called back on a blocking in the back penalty at UNLV.

6 – That’s the amount of non-quarterback rushing yards that is on New Mexico’s team that returned and is currently active.  Those six yards are split between Jaylen Morgan (who hasn’t played in a game yet this season and had four yards last year) and tight end Trace Bruckler (who took a snap at quarterback and got two yards rushing).

7 – That’s the number of consecutive wins in the series for Utah State, which is the longest streak for either team in the series.  The seven-game winning streak for Utah State followed a two-game winning streak for UNM from 2015-16.

8 – That’s the number of touchbacks against Air Force by kicker Luke Drzewiecki, who took over the kickoff duties last game.  Prior to the game, UNM had 10 touchbacks all season over 31 kickoffs.  Of Drzewiecki’s nine kickoffs, the only one that wasn’t a touchback was when he had to kickoff from the 20-yard line after a penalty.

17 – That’s the number of times UNM has had a negative yardage play this year, over 420 plays.  UNM is behind only with The Ohio State University and two option teams in Army and Navy.

35.3 – That’s the points per game for UNM this season, a total that would be the second-best total in program history behind the 2016 team that averaged 36.7 points per game.

131 – That’s where New Mexico’s scoring defense ranks in the FBS out of 134 teams, allowing an average of 42.7 points per game (256 points in six games).

132 – That’s where Utah State’s scoring defense ranks in the FBS out of 134 teams, allowing an average of 42.8 points per game (257 points in six games).

507 – Receiving yards for the season for Luke Wysong.  That total, over just six games, is more than any other season he has had, and its tied for the second-most passing yards in the last 12 seasons.  With 23 more yards, Wysong’s total would be the second-most in the last 16 seasons.

5,467 – The amount of days since UNM’s last blocked punt, the longest skid in the FBS.  UNM last blocked a punt on October 31, 2009.  Hyrum McCarter, the younger player on the Lobo roster, was just three years old when that happened.
