Brandon Ortega Named to Creative Services Team for Lobo Football

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Brandon Ortega is known throughout the state for his sports coverage of everything in New Mexico, particularly Lobo Football.  Now, he will be bringing his talents directly to the state and nationwide through his lens as Ortega was named Assistant Director for Creative Services for Football by head coach Danny Gonzales.

Ortega, who spent the previous five years with KOB 4, leading the popular 6 and 10 p.m. broadcasts as well as hosting New Mexico GameDay, a Friday night staple, joined the Lobo Family at the start of the month.

“We are really excited to have Brandon join us and be a Lobo,” said Gonzales.  “Brandon already was a familiar face for our staff and players, and he has such a great creative side that will help in telling the stories of our players, and we have great stories to tell.”

With Lobo Football, Ortega will work with UNM’s Creative Services team to film various highlight packages and handle many aspects of recruiting visits.  Ortega’s involvement will add and enhance Lobo Football’s social media presence.

Along with his coverage of the Lobos for KOB, Ortega covered everything and anything in the state of New Mexico from 2018-2023, from Isotopes baseball to Eastdale’s trip to the Little League World Series to Teton Saltes winning the Wuerffel Trophy to interviewing Lobo draft picks Jason Sanders and JErrick Reed II.  Prior to coming to the Land of Enchantment, Ortega worked at KRGV in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. He also worked at KTXS in Abilene. While in Texas, Brandon won an AP Award for his reporting.

He and his wife Rebecca Rivera have a son Julian, who was a regular at Lobo Football practices when he worked at KOB.  Outside of sports, Brandon is an accomplished musician, playing drums, guitar and bass, recording at his home studio.
