Lobos and Spartans Play to 1-1 Draw

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team began continued its four-game homestand Sunday with a 1-1 draw against San Jose State at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos move to 4-3-6 overall (2-1-3 MW) with the result, while the Spartans move to 3-5-5 (2-2-2 MW).

Jadyn Edwards scored the goal for the Lobos late in the first half, as she celebrated a record-setting match. It was her 88th career appearance for New Mexico, setting a school record for games played. The previous record of 87 was set last year by Alexa Kirton.

The Lobos nearly took the lead with a pair of chances in midway through the half. Edwards’ first chance in the 26th minute rang off the post and her rebound chance went straight to the keeper. A minute later, Zaria Katesigwa hit the same post on her chance, as the game remained scoreless. Edwards opened the scoring in the 38th minute as she headed in a long free kick from Karlee Maes for her eighth goal of the season. UNM took that 1-0 lead into halftime.

San Jose State drew even just a minute into the second half as Cynthia Flores headed in a corner kick from Taylor Phillips for the equalizer. Midway through the half, Maes twice hit the crossbar, with a chance inside the box in the 59th minute and on a long-distance free kick in the 63rd minute. In the final minute, the Lobos were again robbed by the woodwork as Jaelyn Hendren’s shot from the top of the box was saved by the Spartan keeper off the crossbar.

New Mexico outshot San Jose State 20-11 overall and 7-3 in shots on goal, while holding a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Alli Davis made two saves in goal for UNM.

“I don’t think I have been part of a game as a player or a coach where you hit the post six times,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “We are doing the right things to continue to create chances, and when you create more chances and shots and corners, more often than not you will be successful. Our players will keep working hard and things are going the right way, we just need a bounce to go our way.”

The Lobos continue their four-game homestand on Thursday when they host UNLV. Game time at the UNM Soccer Complex is 7:30 p.m.
