Lobos Play to 1-1 Draw with Portland State

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-1 draw against Portland State on Thursday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos (1-1-2) and Vikings (1-2-2) traded goals a minute apart in the second half to finish the game 1-1, UNM’s second straight 1-1 draw.

Natalie DeGagne scored her first goal of the season for UNM, becoming the third Lobo to find the back of the net this season.

The Lobos controlled the game in the first half, holding advantages of 8-1 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks over the opening 45 minutes, but couldn’t find the opening goal of the game.

In the second half, the Lobos continued the pressure with Leilani Baker nearly giving UNM the lead in the 55th minute, when the Viking keeper pushed her attempt off a through ball just wide of the post. Minutes later, Portland State nearly had the opening goal as the Lobos saved a shot off the line following the Vikings’ only corner kick of the night. UNM took the 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute when DeGagne knocked in a cross from Karlee Maes off a corner kick. But the lead lasted just 57 seconds as Elle Frazier scored for Portland State to tie the game in the 74th minute.

The Lobos outshot the Vikings 18-9 in the game and had a 7-1 corner-kick advantage. Alli Davis made two saves in goal for UNM.

“We need to learn from tonight,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “In games like this, you hope that you prepared them. Was our scout wrong? Was our lineup wrong? That is the first thing we will look at. That is part of it. For them, they need to look at did they control the things they can control? That is energy and effort and I think most of them will agree that it wasn’t where it needed to be tonight.”

The Lobos will conclude its non-conference home schedule on Sunday when it hosts reigning WAC champion Grand Canyon. Game time at the UNM Soccer Complex is 1 p.m.
