Lobos Blanked in Series Finale at California

BERKELEY, Calif. — The University of New Mexico baseball team was blanked, 8-0, in the series finale against California at Stu Gordon Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Four Lobos notched on hit apiece – Adam Schneider, Lenny Junior Ashby, Braydon Runion and Chase Weissenborn. Although freshman starter Justin Still earned the loss, the southpaw turned in an impressive outing as he struck out six batters in 5.0 innings pitched.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bears took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run to open the bottom of the second inning, but then Still promptly struck out three straight batters to end the inning. The Bears added another three runs in the bottom of the third frame, but Still ended the inning with his sixth strikeout of the game.

The Golden Bears tacked on another two runs to take a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning. Still kept Cal scoreless in the fifth and final frame of his outing, forcing a flyout and a double play groundout.

Will Armbruester came in to relieve Still in the sixth inning, allowing two runs but ending the inning with a strikeout swinging.

Armrbuester allowed another run in the seventh as the Bears jumped to an 8-0 advantage.

Jacob Strmiska came in the close the game out in the eighth inning. He forced the Bears into a 1-2-3 inning on a pop out, groundout and fly out.

Pinch hitting for Jeffrey David in the top of the ninth, Adam Schneider notched a single but the Lobos didn’t find any more production, falling to California in the series finale by a final score of 8-0.

New Mexico’s record falls to 19-31 overall, while California’s record improves to an even 25-25.

The Lobos close out the regular season with four straight home games. New Mexico will host in-state rival New Mexico State for the fourth and final Rio Grande Rivalry matchup of the season on May 17 at 3 p.m. (MT), the game being moved up three hours from its original time of 6 p.m. to accommodate the Aggies’ travel. The squad will host Air Force for the regular season three-game series finale on May 19-21.
