Lobos Drop Series Finale at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of New Mexico baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game series at Fresno State by a final score of 6-2.

Kamron Willman led the Lobos with a 2-for-4 outing. Cody Holtz connected for his second home run of the season. Through the final three innings, five New Mexico pitchers combined to allow the Bulldogs just five hits and allow only one run.

After two scoreless innings, Fresno State struck first as they plated three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Starting pitcher Matt Haley forced a three up-three down inning in the fourth with a groundout and two straight swinging strikeouts.

The Lobos got on the board in the top of the fifth frame. Sean Stephens walked to start the inning, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Bulldogs’ catcher a few batters later. Then, Stephens scored on a wild pitch.

New Mexico cut their deficit to 3-2 as Cody Holtz connected for his second home run of the season in the sixth inning as he launched a ball to centerfield.

The Bulldogs scored another three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead. The Lobo pitching staff was able to keep Fresno State off the board through the final few innings, but New Mexico was unable to come back from the deficit, falling 6-2, to the Bulldogs in the series finale.

New Mexico’s record falls to 14-18 overall and 6-9 in Mountain West action, while Fresno State’s record improves to 15-16 overall and 9-6 in MW play.

The Lobos return home for a five game homestand over a six-day span. New Mexico is set to host MW opponent San Diego State for a three-game series from Thursday-Saturday, April 14-16 at Santa Ana Star Field. After Easter Sunday off, the Lobos will then host No. 4 Texas Tech on Monday-Tuesday, April 18-19.
