LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of New Mexico baseball team took an exciting 7-4 victory over in-state rival New Mexico State in the second meeting between the two teams this season.

Lenny Junior Ashby also went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while also hitting his eighth home run of the season. Jeffrey David notched five RBI on two hits, a double and a triple. Coming in to relieve Hudson, Brian McBroom successfully shut down the Aggies through 2.2 innings pitched, allowing only three hits. Aaron Makil (1-1) earned his first win of the season, as he pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game and allowed just one hit while fanning two.

New Mexico State opened up scoring in the bottom of the first as they scored a run to take an early 1-0 lead.

The score stayed the same through the second inning as the Lobos sit down the Aggies with a double play and strikeout.

New Mexico then took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. After a fly out, Cole Posey walked and then stole second. Then, Sean Stephens singled to center field to put runners on the corners. David came up to the plate and connected on the first pitch he saw as he launched a triple to right field to bring home Cole Posey and Sean Stephens.

Ashby then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in David from third.

Hudson kept dealing through the third and fourth innings. He started the fourth with a swinging strikeout and ended it with a looking strikeout to end his outstanding career night.

The fifth through seventh innings went without a score change, but did not lack action. McBroom came in to relieve Hudson, striking out three in his outing and forcing an outstanding double play to get the first two outs in the seventh.

Owen Loesch then came in to relieve McBroom to get the final out of the seventh. He delivered as he struck out the batter to end the inning.

In the eighth inning, the Lobos tacked on another run for a 4-1 advantage. The first batter up in the frame, Ashby worked a 2-2 count and launched his eighth home run of the season.

The Aggies made the game interesting in the bottom of the inning as they scored three runs to tie up the game at 4-4.

The first three Lobo batters loaded the bases as Chase Weissenborn singled, Kamron Willman doubled and then Sean Stephens was hit by pitch. Next up, David doubled to right field, clearing the bases and giving the Lobos a 7-4 lead.

Aaron Makil, who came in to relieve Loesch and get the final two outs in the eighth, shut down the Aggies in the bottom of the ninth. He allowed one hit but did not allow New Mexico State to score as he struck two batters out and ended the game with a groundout.
