by Alma Solis

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of New Mexico baseball team dropped the final game of the midweek series against No. 17 Texas Tech, 11-5, at Rip Griffin Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Braydon Runion hit his second home run of the season, this time against his former school. Lenny Junior Ashby went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Will Armbruester pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless frames in the middle relief spot, fanning one and allowing only two hits.

The Red Raiders got on the board first as they plated four runs in the bottom of the first for an early 4-0 lead. In the next inning, Runion got the Lobos on the board as he ripped the first pitch he saw to left center for a solo jack, making the score 4-1, in favor of Texas Tech.

Through the next couple of innings, starting pitcher Matt Haley kept the Red Raiders off the board, fanning three during that span, and letting his offense get to work.

The Lobos, indeed, got to work in the top of the fourth as they plated three runs to tie the game at 4-4. First, Chase Weissenborn doubled down the right field line to drive home Shane (Johnny) Podsednik. With a 0-2 count, Ashby doubled to right center to bring in Weissenborn and Adam Schneider.

In the top of the fourth, Podsednik hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Cole Posey and give the Lobos a 5-4 advantage over No. 17 Texas Tech, their first lead of the series.

The next few innings were quick shut down innings as the sixth and seventh innings went scoreless.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Red Raiders exploded for seven runs and the Lobos were unable to answer in the top of the next frame, falling to No. 17 Texas Tech, 11-5.

New Mexico’s record falls to 6-11 (3-3 MW), while the Red Raiders improve to 16-3 (0-0 Big12).

The Lobos head to Wichita, Kan., for a three-game series this Friday through Sunday against the Wichita State Shockers.
