Lobos Victorious in Game One Against Fresno State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico baseball team opened their three-game conference series against Fresno State with a 7-3 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.

Junior starting pitcher Riley Egloff picked up his third win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out three batters in six full innings. Brian McBroom notched his second save of the season as he kept the Bulldogs scoreless on just three hits through the last three innings.

Lenny Junior Ashby launched his fourth home run of the season as he went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Three more Lobos had multi-hit games as Lance Russell, Jeffrey David and Chase Weissenborn recorded two hits apiece.

Egloff kept the Bulldogs scoreless through the first three innings, striking out three batters in that time.

New Mexico found its way on the board first in the bottom of the second with two outs and Cody Holtz on first as Weissenborn ripped a triple to right field to bring home Holtz and put the Lobos up 1-0.

In the next inning, the Lobos saw the ball well as four hits, an error and a sacrifice fly helped extend their lead to 5-0. With runners on first and second, Ashby singled up the middle to bring home L Russell. David then hit a double to right field to score Braydon Runion from third. Ashby ran home on a sacrifice fly by Willie Cano. David topped off scoring in the inning as he scored on an error by Fresno State’s right fielder Nate Thimjon.

 

The Bulldogs then tacked on three runs through the middle three innings, to make the score 5-3, still in favor of the Lobos after six innings.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ashby notched his second hit of the night, this time a solo home run launched to the trees outside of the right corner of the field. This marks Ashby’s fourth home run of the season.

In the eighth inning, Weissenborn scored on an error by the Bulldogs’ right fielder, sealing New Mexico’s 7-3 win over Fresno State.

New Mexico’s record improves to 5-8 (2-2 MW), while Fresno State drops to a 6-8 record (0-1 in MW).

The Lobos and Bulldogs continue the three-game conference series on Saturday with a first pitch of 2 p.m. (MT) at Santa Ana Star Field.
