Lobo Baseball Drops Game Two to San Jose State

by Alma Solis

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of New Mexico baseball team dropped a close 3-1 game to San Jose State in the second of a three-game series against the Spartans at Excite Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.

Junior starting pitcher Brett Russell had an outstanding start on the mound for the Lobos, striking out eight batters and holding the Spartans to a single run on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched. At the plate, Lenny Junior Ashby and Willie Cano each notched a pair of hits.

A slow start to the game in which no runs scored in the first two innings. The Spartans scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 lead. Throughout the first three innings, the Lobos’ starter B. Russell struck out six batters, including three straight strikeouts in the first inning, two for the last two outs in the second and one to end the third inning.

The next two innings saw plenty of action, but no score change until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth with runners on first and second, Ashby swung on the first pitch he saw to launch a double to right field and bring home Adam Schneider to knot the game at 1-1.

B. Russell went three up-three down in the bottom of the sixth with a strikeout to temporarily halt the Spartans from regaining the lead. The Lobos then went three up-three down in the top of the seventh. B. Russell notched the first two outs of the bottom of the inning before allowing a double and being relieved by Miguel Reyes Jr. who got the last out.

The Spartans regained the lead at the bottom of the eighth from a two-run homerun, making the score 3-1, in favor of SJSU. Although New Mexico was able to get runners on first and third in the top of the ninth, they were not able to execute. The Lobos fell, 3-1, to San Jose State in game two.

The Lobos fall to a 4-6 record (1-1 MW), while the Spartans improve to 7-4 record (1-1 MW) on the season.

New Mexico and San Jose State will play the rubber match on Sunday with a first pitch time set for 1:05 p.m. (MT) at Excite Ballpark in San Jose, Calif.
