by Alma Solis

SURPRISE, Ariz. – On the final day of the season-opening Sanderson Ford Collegiate Classic, the Lobos were downed by the No. 11-ranked Oregon State Beavers, 13-3, on Sunday evening.

Three Lobos notched two hits as Adam Schneider went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Kamron Willman went 2-for-4 with a run, and Justin Olson went 2-for-3 with a double. In his first start as a Lobo, Brett Russell held the Beavers to one earned run on six hits in four innings pitched.

The Lobos struck first in the top of the first as Jeffrey David smashed a two-run homerun past the centerfield wall to put New Mexico up 2-0 early.

Oregon State quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs to take a 3-2 lead. From the second to fifth innings, the score remained the same. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Beavers brought home another run to extend their lead to 4-2. The Lobos then began a rally in the top of the seventh as Willie Cano doubled and then reached home on a Schneider single up the middle, making the score 4-3, still in favor of OSU.

In the bottom of the inning, the Beavers added on another five runs to extend their lead to 9-3. With the run rule in effect due to travel times for the Lobos, Oregon State added on another four runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the game. The Lobos fell, 13-3, to the No. 11 ranked Beavers.

The Lobos return home to host Holy Cross on Feb. 25-27 for their home opening series at Santa Ana Star Field.
