by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s golf team concludes its fall schedule this week as it travels to California for the Saint Mary’s Invitational. The tournament will run Nov. 8-10 at the prestigious 7,002-yard, par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Club, one of the host courses of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The tournament will consist of one round each day, Monday-Wednesday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.

This year’s tournament features 19 schools, including five ranked in the GolfStat Top 50. The Lobos, ranked No. 40 nationally in the latest rankings, headline the field along with No. 6 Stanford, No. 31 San Francisco, No. 43 Oregon State and No. 50 Nevada. Rounding out the field are BYU, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Northern Illinois, Oregon, Pacific, San Diego, Santa Clara, Seattle, Washington State and host Saint Mary’s.

New Mexico’s lineup for the event is Sam Choi, Albert Boneta, Bastien Amat, Brandon Shong and Matthew Watkins. Ignacio Arcaya is playing as an individual. Choi, Boneta and Amat are coming off competitions last week. Choi played at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Dubai, finishing T-13th. Amat and Boneta represented their home countries in The Spirit International in Texas.

The event will be the fourth of the season for New Mexico. The Lobos are coming off a victory at the Wolf Pack Classic in Nevada, where Boneta took home medalist honors. UNM also finished second in their home event, the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course.

The event was not held last fall due to the pandemic. Two years ago, the Lobos finished fourth at the Saint Mary’s Invitational.
