Lobos Keep it Close but Drop Doubleheader to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The University of New Mexico baseball team kept it close with San Diego State through two games on Friday but were walked off by the Aztecs in both games of the doubleheader. The Lobos led the first game through five innings, but it was not enough to hold off the Aztecs as they gained momentum in the last frame.

Game One:

The Lobos were led offensively by Harry Fullerton, who went two-for-four with one home run and three RBIs. Jarrett Gonzales and Lance Russel also went two-for-four from the plate, Gonzales with a double, a home run, and three RBIs, and Russel with an RBI. Willie Cano posted one RBI and a double in the game.

The Lobos got on the board in the third frame off a double to left field from junior Willie Cano, bringing home senior Jarrett Gonzales. Cano then scored off a passed ball on the next play, bringing the Lobos within one.

Senior Harry Fullerton then hit a home run in the fourth inning, tying the game. The Lobos then took the lead off a three-run home run through the left-field by Gonzales, scoring junior Jack Silverman and senior Lance Russell.

Russel then went on to single through the right field in the sixth inning, scoring senior Kyle Landers. The Lobos then jumped ahead 9-4 in the seventh frame off a 2 RBI single by Fullerton, scoring sophomore Mack Chambers and redshirt-senior Connor Mang.

The Lobos went into the ninth inning with the lead, but the Aztecs got on a roll that could not be stopped, and the Lobos were edged out by SDSU 9-10.

Game Two:

It was a close game through-and-through as game two of the doubleheader went to extra innings to be decided.

Mack Chambers went two-for-four, scoring one run. Cole Posey was one-for-one as a pinch hitter and posted two RBIs.

The Lobos scored their first run in the fifth frame as Russell stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, which allowed Mang to score on the play.

Posey then hit a two-RBI single in the seventh inning, scoring Jared Martin and Landers. The game-tying run came in the eighth inning as Mack Chambers stole third and then scored on an error by the third baseman.

The Lobos forced the game to 10 innings but fell short of clinching the win, falling to SDSU 4-5.

The Lobos will look to steal a game from the Aztecs tomorrow in the series finale at 2 p.m. MT. Head to the Lobo baseball schedule page for direct links to keep up with the Lobos.
