Lobos Split Doubleheader with Nevada

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico baseball team returned home to host Nevada in its first home series since Feb. 27-28. The Lobos (7-11, 5-6 MW) split the doubleheader versus the Wolf Pack (7-9, 4-4 MW), posting a 6-5 walk-off win in game one.

GAME ONE

The first game was neck-and-neck through its entirety, as the Wolf Pack jumped ahead 0-1 in the second inning. The Lobos scored their first run in the sixth frame off a double from junior Willie Cano. The hit brought sophomore Cole Posey in all the way from first base.

The Lobos tied the game at three-a-piece in the ninth inning from a two-run single from Harry Fullerton. The senior delivered in a bases-loaded situation, bringing in both sophomore Mack Chambers and junior Kyler Castillo, allowing the Lobos to fight on in extra innings.

Nevada scored two runs in the top of the 10th, but the Lobos answered back with a two-RBI single from Castillo, allowing seniors Jarrett Gonzales and Lance Russel to score, tying the game at five.

The play that earned the Lobos a walk-off win came in the 11th frame as Gonzales singled up the left-field, allowing redshirt-senior Connor Mang to score the walk-off run.

Both Cano and Russel finished the game with a second-base hit. Cano at third base went 2-3 from the plate and earned one RBI. Both Castillo and Fullerton finished the game with two RBIs, with Castillo going 2-5 with one run and Fullerton finishing 1-2.

Chambers finished the game with two hits on four at-bats, scoring one run in the game. Both Posey and Gonzales went 2-6 from the plate and posted one run each. Gonzales also finished the game with one RBI.

GAME TWO

Senior pitcher Justin Armbruester continued to show his dominance on the mound by striking out 11 players, allowing just three hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Armbruester posted a no-hit second inning and kept the Wolf Pack scoreless through a total of four frames.

It was another close game for the Lobos as they went into the ninth inning tied at seven runs. The Wolf Pack posted two runs in the last frame, enough to edge out the Lobos 7-9.

Fullerton managed to keep the game close, posting two triples on two hits, tallying a total of three runs. The last UNM player to post two triples in a game was Chris Dunn on Feb. 24, 2018, versus Central Michigan.

Mang brought in two runs and went 1-1 from the plate. Cano, Chambers, and Kennard posted one RBI each, and Cano scored two of his own, finishing the game 2-4 from the plate. The Lobos posted a total of 14 hits but left 13 players stranded, which ultimately allowed the Wolf Pack to secure the win.
