Lobos Drop Series Finale to Wildcats

MANHATTAN, KAN. — The University of New Mexico baseball team stared strong in the series-finale versus K-State (13-6), but a strong start was not enough, and the Lobos (6-10, 3-5 MW) dropped 8-17 to the Wildcats. UNM tallied a season second-best 14 hits, posting a total of six RBIs in the game.

“It was a hot day with a lot of wind that blew some home runs today,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “(Tristin) Lively wasn’t his usual self today. It wasn’t a good outing for us.”

Sophomore Mack Chambers went 3-5 from the plate, posting two RBIs, and tallied three runs of his own. Chambers scored his first run in the first inning off a single from junior Willie Cano. The sophomore then hit a two-run home run in the second inning, bringing the Lobos within one of the Wildcats. Chambers scored for the third time in the sixth inning off a passed ball, and junior Kyler Castillo advanced to third on the play.

Castillo had an impressive outing, going 2-4 with two doubles, scoring in the second inning. Junior Adam Schneider went 2-3 from the plate, putting two runs on the board through the first two frames. Also scoring in the game was senior Tresten Kennard, who went 1-2 on the day, and sophomore Cole Posey finished the game with a double, a run, and a total of two hits. Senior Lance Russel brought Posey home in the third inning, finishing the game with a hit and one RBI.

Junior Isiah Campa pitched a total of 2.2 innings, striking out five players, throwing out a total of 41 strikes. Senior Miguel Reyes Jr. threw out eight strikes in 10 pitches.

The Lobos will now return to New Mexico to host the Nevada Wolfpack March 27-28. The three-game series will start with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. MT on Saturday at Santa Ana Star Field. Fans will be allowed to attend at a limited capacity. To keep up with the Lobos, follow @UNMLoboBaseball on Twitter.
