Silverman Hits Fourth Home Run of the Season, Lobos Fall to Wildcats 7-1

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Junior Jack Silverman of the University of New Mexico baseball team had an impressive outing on both sides of the field, but it was not enough to hold off Kanas State (12-5) and the Lobos (5-9, 4-5 MW) were routed by the Wildcats 7-1.

Silverman hit a bomb in the top of the sixth inning, tying the game at one-a-piece. The homer marks Silverman’s fourth of the season and is now tied with senior Jared Martin and Wyatt Hendrie of SDSU for the most home runs in the Mountain West this season.

“We played a first round draft choice (Jordan Wicks) and I thought we had a chance to beat him,” said head coach Ray Birmingham.

The junior had an impressive unassisted double play to close out the fifth inning as he caught a line out to first base and quickly made his way to the bag for the double play. Silverman finished with a total of 10 putouts in the game, one hit, one RBI, and one run. Junior Kyler Castillo led the team in hitting and saw two hits in the game.

Redshirt-senior Nathaniel Garley kept the Wildcats off the board for the first three innings and pitched a total of five. Senior Payton Strambler took the mound at the end of the seventh inning and, in 1.1 innings, struck out four players on five at-bats.

“Garley pitched his butt off and gave us a chance,” said Birmingham.

The Lobos will face K-State again tomorrow in Manhattan, Kan. at 3:00 p.m. MT, and will round out the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. For links to follow tomorrow’s game, visit the Lobo Baseball schedule page.
