Lobos Tie Weekend Series with 6-4 Win Over Wildcats
MANHATTAN, Kan. — The University of New Mexico baseball team posted a dominant 6-4 win over the Kansas State Wildcats (12-6), tying the weekend series at one-a-piece. The Lobos (6-9, 3-5 MW) were led by another impressive outing from senior pitcher Justin Armbruester, pitching a total of 6.2 innings, striking out eight hitters, and lowered his ERA to 1.35. Armbruester needed only four frames to tally seven of his eight strikeouts.
Junior Willie Cano led the Lobos on offense with three hits, one RBI, and one run. The shortstop earned his RBI in the seventh inning, reaching base on a fielder’s choice to the Wildcats pitcher. Senior Kyle Landers scored on the play. Along with junior Jack Silverman, Cano scored in the fourth inning off a double from junior Adam Schneider in his first start of the season.
Schneider finished the game with two hits and two RBIs, and Landers tallied two back-to-back doubles. Junior Kyler Castillo hit a two-run home run in the third inning and finished the game with a total of two hits and two RBIs. Castillo’s home run put the Lobos up 3-1, a lead that would not change through the entirety of the game.
Sophomore Mack Chambers earned an RBI in the third inning, scoring junior Jacob Guiterrez for the first run of the game for the Lobos.
The Lobo defense held the Wildcats at one run through seven innings. Sophomore Bobby Meza earned the save, coming in to pitch in the eighth inning. Meza was able to pitch his way out of a bases-loaded situation in the eighth, striking out two in the ninth, securing the Lobo win.
