Lobos Edged Out in Final Inning by Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. — In a game that saw three Lobo home runs, The University of New Mexico’s baseball team (5-8, 4-5 MW) held the lead through six innings but was edged out in the final inning by Fresno State 5-6. Juniors Kyler Castillo, Jack Silverman, and senior Kyle Landers all hit a bomb in the game, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Bulldogs (5-5, 3-3 MW).

The Lobos tallied a total of 12 hits on the day, led by junior Willie Cano, who tallied three hits, one double, along with two RBIs. Senior Jared Martin, along with Silverman and Castillo, had two hits in the game, and Castillo, Landers, Silverman, and freshman Chase Weissenborn posted an RBI each.

Castillo posted his second home run of the season in the first inning of the game, sending it through the left field. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first, but the Lobos answered back in the second off a fielder’s choice situation. Cano reached base, and Martin managed to make it home on the play.

After a scoreless third inning, Silverman hit a lead-off bomb through the left field, regaining the lead for the Lobos in the fourth inning. Similarly, Landers hit a lead-off home run in the fifth inning, increasing the Lobo lead. Then, Weissenborn earned an RBI after grounding a ball to the shortstop, allowing enough time for Silverman to make it home.

Both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings were 1-2-3 outs for the Lobo defense. Through the sixth inning, redshirt senior pitcher Nathaniel Garley retired 10 in a row before the Bulldogs found momentum and scored two runs. The Bulldogs then tied the game in the eighth inning and earned the walk-off win in the ninth, edging out the Lobos 5-6.

Garley finished the game with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Sophomore Terrell Hudson came in as relief in the sixth and tallied two outs in his 2.2 inning appearance.

The Lobos will now head to Manhattan, Kan. for a three-game series versus K-State. Earlier in the season, the Lobos took down the Wildcats 4-3 at the Sanderson Ford Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
