Lobos Drop Both in Doubleheader to UNLV

LAS VEGAS, NEV. — After opening the conference season 3-0 over Air Force last weekend, the University of New Mexico’s baseball team dropped two games to the University of Las Vegas in a windy doubleheader in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lobos (4-5, 4-5) had a hard-fought day, but the Rebels (4-1, 4-1) created momentum in key parts of each game that UNM could not recover from.

“The wind was blowing out of the yard, and it was a hot day,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “They had 10 home runs on the day. They out-pitched us by a lot.”

Game Two:

The Lobos were able to create momentum in the second game of the day. Sophomore Cole Posey brought in the first run for the Lobos in the third inning, and in the fourth, the sophomore hit a double, earning two RBIs. Posey saw five at-bats with two hits, one double, two RBIs and one run in the game.

The Lobos then took the lead in the fifth inning off a lead-off home run from senior Jared Martin, his fourth on the season. The Rebels then answered back with a run in the sixth, but the Lobos reclaimed the lead off another Lobo home run from sophomore Mack Chambers.

Both Martin and Chambers finished the game with two hits, one RBI, and one run each. Junior Willie Cano finished the game with a season-high three hits and one run. The team posted 13 hits, which is tied for the team’s second-most hits this season.

The Rebels would score four runs in the bottom of the eighth, creating a lead the Lobos could not overcome, and the Lobos ultimately dropped game two 5-8.

Game One:

Leading the team in hitting was junior Jack Silverman, who finished the game with three hits and two RBIs. Silverman earned a run of his own off a two-run home run in the fourth, his second home run of the season, bringing home senior Harry Fullerton.

Shortstop Mack Chambers helped the Lobos get on the board in the third inning off a triple. The sophomore brought in both sophomore Cole Posey and freshman Chase Weissenborn, earning two RBIs on the play. Chambers also earned a run in the fifth inning when senior Jared Martin hit the second two-run home run of the game by the Lobos. Junior Kyler Castillo also scored a run in the fifth.

Four players finished with a run and a hit each – Posey, Castillo, Chambers and Martin. With three at-bats, Weissenborn finished the game with two hits and a run.

The Lobos could not hold off the UNLV offense and dropped game one 24-7 in seven innings.

The Lobos retake the field tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT for the final of the three-game series. A live stream will be available on the UNLV Athletics Youtube page, and live stats can be followed here.
