Lobo Athletics Can Host Outdoor Events with Limited Capacity
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has announced that outdoor sporting events can be hosted by The University of New Mexico with limited fan capacity. The announcement will allow Lobo Baseball to host the Air Force Falcons this Saturday in a doubleheader at Santa Ana Star Field.
It will be the first major spectator sporting event with fans in the state of New Mexico since March 11, 2020, when The Pit hosted the Wednesday sessions of the NMAA State High School Basketball Tournament. That tournament was completed without fans.
For this weekend’s games, UNM will play Air Force in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at noon. Gates at Santa Ana Star Field will open one hour prior to first pitch. All patrons must wear masks in the facility, abide by social distancing guidelines, and attendance will be limited to 600 fans, just under the 25% capacity threshold for outdoor events per the state health order.
Tickets are now on sale. It is highly encouraged to purchase your ticket before the game and use the mobile or print-at-home option when accessing your ticket. There are limited seats available, so buying your ticket in advance will ensure your admission to the game. All tickets sold are general admission. To purchase tickets, visit this link or call 505-925-5626. Please note, if you plan to attend both Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s game, you will have to purchase a ticket for each day.
Student tickets, free to current UNM students, will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. There are a total of 100 student tickets available, and they can be reserved here. You must have a valid student email or ID to reserve a student ticket.
Tickets will be available for purchase on the day of, but it is highly encouraged to purchase your tickets before making your way to the field. Only credit/debit card transactions will be processed on location.
Due to the vaccinations that will be occurring at The Pit, it is preferred that fans enter the parking lots via University Blvd.
Also, due to the timing of the site change, UNM’s concessions will not be able to mobilize for this weekend’s games safely and effectively. For this weekend only, Lobo Athletics will waive the policy of no outside food or drink. Fans are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages into Santa Ana Star Field.
If you already purchased a ticket through the Amarillo Sodpoodles, visit https://www.milb.com/amarillo/tickets or call 806-803-9647 for a refund of that ticket. You will have to purchase a new ticket through the UNM Ticket Office to attend any of games this weekend in Albuquerque.
“On behalf of everyone at Lobo Athletics and myself, we would like to say how extremely grateful we are to Governor Lujan Grisham and her staff for making this opportunity possible to play home games in Albuquerque,” said Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez. “Our student-athletes have successfully followed COVID protocols all year, and we pledge to continue that effort to assist New Mexico as we continue progressing together in the fight against the pandemic. We have been preparing for this moment all year and will be ready to host!”
“I am so pleased by Governor Lujan Grisham’s decision to allow athletics to resume under the conditions she’s set forth – this is a great step forward,” said UNM President Dr. Garnett Stokes. “It is outstanding news for our UNM student-athletes and our coaching staff. We are proud of their resilience and are looking forward to seeing our Lobos play.”
Along with baseball, other sports that will be allowed to host games and matches with limited spectators are softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field and women’s soccer.
