Emond and Mang taken in final day of MLB Draft

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A day after Justin Slaten was drafted in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, the University of New Mexico baseball team added two more draftees as seniors Malachi Emond and Jared Mang were both picked in the 18th round on Wednesday.

Emond, the Lobos’ closer this past season, was taken by the Baltimore Orioles with the 528th overall pick in the draft. Four picks later, Mang was selected by the Detroit Tigers with the 532nd overall pick. With three total players being drafted, the Lobos have now had 17 years all-time with at least three players drafted. Under Coach Ray Birmingham, the number of seasons is six.

A native of Coventry, Conn., Emond’s path to being drafted was a rather unorthodox one. After beginning his college career at Division III Albertus Mangus (New Haven, Conn.), Emond then transferred to Western Oklahoma State College (Altus, Okla.) for his sophomore season. The final two years of his college career came at UNM.

In his two seasons, Emond established himself as one of the top relievers in the Mountain West. Appearing in 52 career games out of the bullpen for the Lobos, Emond sported a 6-3 overall record and a 3.10 ERA with 12 saves. In 78.1 innings pitched, Emond registered 104 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .241 batting average against.

A four-year standout for the Lobos, Mang put the finishing touches on a sensational career at UNM with a productive senior campaign. Overall, he hit .365 (76-for-208) this season with 57 runs scored, 23 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 51 RBIs. He slugged at a clip of .587 and posted an on-base percentage of .441. Mang also swiped 15 bases and did not commit an error defensively.

In MW-only action, Mang hit .385 (45-for-117) over 28 games with 28 runs scored, 13 doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 19 RBIs. Mang’s MW slugging percentage was .615, and his on-base percentage checked in at .426. His batting average, slugging percentage and hits all ranked second in league play while his total bases (72) and doubles topped the league in MW-only play.
