Walters scores a goal and dishes out two assists in 3-1 win vs. Nevada

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – True freshman Maysa Walters enjoyed a breakout game on Friday night as she played a significant role in the University of New Mexico’s 3-1 win over Nevada. Registering four points on the night, Walters was a part of all three goals for the Lobos as she cashed one in herself and assisted on the other two.

Walter’s goal in the game was her second of the season and came in the 14th minute. On the play, Walters was in the right place at the right time and put the ball in the back of the net. Prior to that, Karlee Maes plated a ball from midfield into the box and Alesia Garcia was able to get a sliding right foot on the ball. The touch by Garcia nearly found its way in goal, but a tip save pushed it off the cross bar. Off that carom, Walters was right there and finished the chance.

Just over 10 minutes later, Walters helped create the second goal of the game for the Lobos as she played a ball out wide right to Leilani Baker. Baker then one-timed it off her right foot all the way across the goal finishing deep in the left side for the score. The goal was the third of the season for Baker.

The Lobos would carry that 2-0 advantage into the locker room.

Just three minutes into the second half, Walters again assisted in a Lobo goal. This time it was Gwen Maly who she found in the box and Maly finished with a quick shot just past the Wolf Pack goal keeper in the lower-left hand side of the goal.

In the 78th minute, Nevada ended the shutout on a goal by Casey Crawford, making it a 3-1 game.

The win pushes the Lobos to 6-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Mountain West play. It also marked a milestone for head coach Heather Dyche as it was the 50th win for her as head coach at UNM.

The Lobos will look to carry the momentum of the win into Sunday’s afternoon clash with UNLV. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. out at the UNM Soccer Complex.
