Lobos drop MW opener in OT

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — In their opening game in Mountain West play, The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team also played their first overtime match of the season, but ultimately dropped a 1-0 result to Colorado State on Friday evening in Fort Collins, Colo.

The game-winning shot came from CSU’s (6-2-1, 1-0-0) Caeley Lordemann in the 96th minute of the match. In defeat, the Lobos (4-4-0, 0-1-0) outshot the Rams 15-13 in the game with six of those shots coming on goal.

The Lobos led the first half of the game offensively, taking a majority of their shots in the first 45′ as they took nine of their 15 shots. Four of those shots were on goal, but all were saved by CSU goalie Gabi McDonald.

UNM’s defense also played a strong part in the match, keeping the Rams scoreless through 90 minutes, forcing the game into overtime. CSU saw six opportunities during the match to jump on the board, but the effort by redshirt-sophomore goalie, Malia Vanisi, kept the game scoreless. Vanisi finished the match with six saves.

Redshirt-junior Gwen Maly saw the most shot opportunities in the match, leading the team with four. Senior Jessie Hix was next on the squad to rack up shots at three.

The Lobos remain on the road to continue their conference slate at Wyoming on September 29. They will then return home to host Nevada on October 4.
