Lobo alum Porras added to baseball coaching staff

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Lobo alum has been selected to join the University of New Mexico baseball coaching staff as Trey Porras has been hired as the team’s volunteer assistant coach.

Porras played for the Lobos from 2011-12, capping his UNM career with a senior season that saw him hit .324 with a home run, eight doubles, 35 RBI and 35 runs in 50 games played as he helped the Lobos win a Mountain West regular-season and tournament championship as the team’s first baseman. UNM also won both MW titles during his junior season with him playing in 37 games.

Porras is taking over for Tony Cappuccilli, who took a position with the Los Angeles Dodgers after three seasons with the Lobos.

“We’re replacing a class act with a class act,” UNM coach Ray Birmingham said. “Tony did a great job and Trey will as well. Both are great with people and the players. It’s also great to have a Lobo alum on staff who has been here and knows what it takes to win championships.”

Porras – a Needville, Texas, native – was previously an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since 2014. He’s also been the head coach of summer collegiate teams the Hoptown Hoppers (2015-16 – won an Ohio Valley League title in 2016) and the Brazos Valley Bombers this past summer, leading them to the Texas Collegiate League title.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to work at the University of New Mexico,” Porras said. “As an alum, I could not be more excited to return home to UNM. I look forward to learning from and working with an outstanding coaching staff. It’s a great time to be a Lobo!”

Prior to his playing days at UNM, Porras played at Wharton County Junior College and was a first-team all-conference player his sophomore season. Porras was also named WCJC’s most outstanding student-athlete (Johnnie Frankie Award).

Porras graduated from Needville High School in Needville, Texas, in 2008 where he lettered in four sports (football, basketball, baseball and track). He was also named team captain in football, basketball and baseball, earned all-state honors as a tight end in football and received all-area honors for baseball.
