Several Lobos shining in collegiate summer leagues

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It’s been a busy summer for many of the student-athletes who helped the University of New Mexico baseball program claim the 2017 Mountain West championship – the program’s fifth regular-season title in the last seven seasons.

While four players – Luis Gonzalez, Carl Stajduhar, Tyler Stevens and Jack Zoellner – are spending the summer chasing their professional dreams after being selected in the 2017 MLB Draft (see the Lobos in the Pros update from last month – another is coming later this month), several more of the 2017 Lobos were scattered across the country during their summer playing in various collegiate leagues.

All-Mountain West and Academic All-American Jared Mang stayed hot this summer as he’s hitting .349 with three home runs, 10 doubles, 26 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 40 games for the Brazos Valley Bombers of the Texas Collegiate League. The Lobos’ starting shortstop from 2017 Hayden Schilling was named Second Team SoCal Collegiate Baseball League after helping the Palm Springs Power to a title by hitting .398 with five home runs, seven doubles, three triples, 37 RBI, 33 runs and nine stolen bases in 27 games.

There were three returning Lobos playing for the Eau Claire Express of the Northwoods League (Robby Campillo, Drew Gillespie and Cody Dye) while UNM also had a pair of players in the Cape Cod Baseball League in closer Christian Tripp (who was stellar with a 2.66 ERA to go along with a 2-0 record, four saves and 34 strikeouts in 27 innings of relief) and James Harrington – both with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.  Chad Smith (2.11 ERA, 18 strikeouts, 12 innings) had a strong season for the Hays Larks of the Jayhawk League in Kansas as well.
