Former Lobo Don Perkins Inducted Into Texas Sports Hall of Fame

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame Induction Committee has announced its 2006 class of inductees. Scheduled to appear in Waco for the induction ceremonies are former Houston Comets WNBA basketball star Cynthia Cooper, University of Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds, Olympic decathlete Rafer Johnson, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, former University of Texas running back Roosevelt Leaks, former Houston Oiler quarterback Warren Moon, former University of New Mexico and Dallas Cowboys running back Don Perkins and Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims.

Don Perkins became New Mexico’s second All-America for his performance during the 1959 season. A three-year letterman (1957-59) and a two-time All-Skyline selection (1958-59), Perkins galloped for 2,001 yards in his career.

A versatile performer running, catching, and returning kicks, Perkins racked up 3,466 all-purpose yards. An AP third team choice as a senior, Perkins finished first in the nation in kickoff returns (34.7 yards a return) and eighth in scoring with 74 points. The Waterloo, Iowa, native accounted for 1,459 all-purpose yards that season.

Perkins went on to star with the Dallas Cowboys from 1961-68. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Perkins rushed for 6,217 career yards and is a member of the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor.
