Tyler Shumate joined the Lobo Football program in January of 2024, and he serves as Assistant Director of Athletic Performance for head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

This will be Shumate’s 4th year working with Bronco Mendenhall.

With New Mexico, Shumate will work under Nate Pototschnik in the athletic performance space in the areas of strength, conditioning and injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Shumate came to UNM after three years at the Associate AD for Sport Performance at Northern Arizona where he directed the program and staff from 2021 until the end of 2023, working with the football program and overseeing others.

Prior to that, he spent three years at Virginia, working with Mendenhall’s Cavaliers from 2018 through the spring of 2021.  He got his collegiate start at Arizona State, first as an intern in 20216 before spending a year as a graduate assistant.

A native of Spencerville, Ohio, Shumate earned a bachelor’s in exercise science with a minor in coaching from Mount Union in 2016.  He was a member of the track & field program at Mount Union, qualifying for the Division III Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw.  While at Mount Union, he serves as a student strength and conditioning coach. He earned a master’s in higher education and athletic administration from Virginia.
