Mac Austin joined the Lobo family in January 2025 and serves as a defensive graduate assistant.  He came to UNM after a stint at Harvard University.

With the Crimson, Austin served as a defensive quality control coach, where he was part of Harvard’s 2024 Ivy League Championship Team.  He coaches a pair of all-Ivy League players, including first-team selection defensive end Jacob Psyk and second-teamer defensive tackle Tyler Huenemann.

Austin got his collegiate coaching career started at his alma mater, John Carroll University.  In 2023, he coached the tight ends, mentoring Lucas D’Orazio to First Team All-OAC honors and First Team All-Region honors, following his achievement of First Team All-Region and First Team All-OAC honors in 2022.

Austin played for the Blue Streaks from 2017 to 21 as a linebacker. He holds a BA in Communications and a Master’s in Sports Leadership, both from John Carroll University, in 2022. Austin is a native of Aurora, Ohio.
