Graduate Assistant Athletic Performance

John McWilliams enters his fourth season with the New Mexico Lobos and his third as an Assistant Athletic Performance Coach after spending one season as a G.A. with the program.

Working alongside Coach Scott Holsopple, John will help in all facets of the strength and conditioning program. He will be directly responsible for implementing a strength program for the injured athletes on the Lobo football team. His other responsibilities include directing and facilitating strength training sessions, teaching safe and proper technique, and assisting in the nutrition program.

John came to New Mexico from The University of Alabama, where he was an intern and a graduate student. As an intern, John directed the strength and conditioning program for men’s cheerleading. He also facilitated training sessions for all of Alabama’s track and field teams, women’s rowing and softball. A great deal of his experience came from working directly with the Alabama running backs as football spotter.

John brings a great deal of athletic experience to New Mexico. In 2015, he qualified for the American Open for Olympic weightlifting. Prior to competing as a weightlifter, John played football and rugby for his alma mater, Valdosta State University.

During his time at The University of Alabama, under Coach Scott Cochran, Coach Michelle Diltz, and Coach Terry Jones, John was nominated and received the CSCCa Lance Vermeil Award. He is certified through the NSCA, CSCCa, and USAW.

John lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his wife, Deshia and son, John III.  He received his master’s in Human Performance.  They recently had their first child, John Jr.
