Austin Gatewood joined the Lobo Football program in January of 2024, and he serves as a defensive analyst. He comes to New Mexico after serving as the outside linebackers coach at East Tennessee State University. In 2022, he was a defensive quality control staffer with Vanderbilt where he worked under UNM defensive coordinator Nick Howell.
This will be Gatewood’s first year working with Bronco Mendenhall.
With New Mexico, Gatewood will serve as a defensive analyst, working on practice planning, analytics and pregame scouting.
At Vanderbilt, Gatewood spent four seasons, starting out his time with the Commodores as a football operations intern before moving into a defensive graduate assistant role followed by a defensive quality control role.
Gatewood played four years at East Tennessee State, where he started in 41 of 45 possible games, totaling 169 tackles in his career with 23 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles and two interceptions.
The native of Ooltewah, Tennessee, Gatewood earned a bachelor’s in physical education from ETSU in 2017, and a master’s in liberal arts and sciences from Vanderbilt in 2022.
