Grant Smith joined the Lobo Family in the April of 2023, and he serves as the athletic trainer for the men’s basketball program. Prior to working with basketball, Smith was with the Lobo football program and served as the director of rehabilitation for the program. He came to UNM after serving a one-year apprenticeship with the Green Bay Packers.
With UNM, Smith worked with the 115-member Lobo Football squad overseeing injury prevention and maintenance. He also directly oversaw all of UNM’s injury rehabilitation, developing programs in consultation with UNM’s athletic performance staff.
With the Packers, Smith oversaw inventory and emergency management, injury evaluation and corrective exercise skills.
Smith, who also previously served internships with the Kansas City Chiefs (2019-20,earing a Super Bowl ring) and the Minnesota Vikings (2018), spent two years as a graduate assistant athletic trainer with Nebraska. There he graduated with a degree in Higher Educations Administration in 2022. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri in 2020 in Athletic Training.
