UNLV Tops UNM 4-0
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Lobos had a shot at the doubles point but UNLV pulled out two squeakers for a 1-0 lead, and then toop three middle singles matches for a 4-0 sweep of UNM. The Rebels moved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain West while UNM dropped to 8-9 overall and 2-2. The Lobos host Fresno State and San Jose State next weekend.
Rebekkah Gaines and Maria Sodre played well at No. 1 doubles, earning a 6-2 win over Hanna Vinahradava and Nikol Mercheva, and UNM had a chance with both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles sitting at 4-4 with UNLV serving. The Rebels got even with a 6-4 win after a service break at No. 3 as Kaho Omaya and Sofiia Sokolvak beat Marika Matsoukatidi and Sofia Taborga. In the middle, Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao edged Maud Vandeputte and Coumba Ben Niangadou 7-5 for a 1-0 UNLV lead.
The Rebels then took control in singles with opening set wins at 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles, with Vandeputte and Sodre winning for UNM. The Rebels then swept three matches in the middle for the win. Veronika Kliuch beat Sarah O’Connor 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, Zhao beat Gaines 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Mircheva beat Matsoukatidi 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 for the win.
