by Frank Mercogliano

STEPHENSVILLE, Texas — Sarah O’Connor continued her winning ways, but it wasn’t enough at homestanding Tartleton State defeated UNM 5-1 on Saturday as the Lobos earned a split of the two-match set in Texas.  UNM defeated Abilene Christian on Friday 4-2.

The Lobos mixed up doubles teams in an effort to shake things up, but the Lobos lost the doubles point 2-1 to fall behind 1-0.  The lone win was a 6-4 win for Maria Matsoukatidi and Sofia Taborga.  Down 1-0, UNM got its only point on a 6-1, 6-2 win for O’Connor at No. 3 singles.  O’Connor has now won five of her last seven matches to get back to .500 on the season.  Maud Vandeputte had been a perfect 7-0 in the spring, but that came to an end with a 7-5, 6-3 loss that clinched the match for Tarleton State.  TSU got a fifth point as right as that match was ending, Adliya Mukhutdinova won in a tiebreaker over Maria Sodre.

UNM heads back on the road to start the back half of an eight-match road swing with two matches next weekend, at Grand Canyon and at Northern Arizona.
