Lobos Host Colorado, Weber State This Weekend
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After a fun opening home weekend, the Lobos are back in action for a pair of matches at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium as the Lobos will host the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday at 10:30 am and then the Weber State Wildcats on Super Bowl Sunday at 11 am.
The Lobos enter the weekend at 2-3 after sweeping Western New Mexico and CSU Pueblo last Saturday and then dropping a wild nearly 4-hour match to Gonzaga 4-3. Colorado is 4-1 on the season having picked up wins over Air Force, Denver, Colorado State and IUPUI with a loss to Illinois.
Weber State, which plays New Mexico State on Friday afternoon, is sitting at 0-6 on the year, falling to BYU, Boise State, UNLV, Youngstown State, Oral Roberts and UTEP.
The Lobos last week picked up a pair of victories, winning 7-0 over WNMU and CSUP. UNM got a pair of 3-0 singles weeks from Maud Vandeputte and Sofia Taborga. Vandeputte’s three wins included a pair of wins at No. 1, her first time playing at the top slot. Coumba Ben Niangadou, who joined the team officially last week after being signed in the fall and Sarah O’Connor both went 2-0 on the week with O’Connor picking up a win against Gonzaga at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, O’Connor and Maria Sodre went a perfect 2-0 in doubles as UNM went 6-2 on the weekend in doubles. The matches this weekend are the final home matches in non-conference play as UNM won’t return home until hosting Utah State on March 21.
