Lobo Men Go 6-3 on Day 1 in Phoenix
PHOENIX, Ariz. — New Mexico went 6-3 on the day in men’s tennis, going 4-2 in singles against Grand Canyon and 2-1 in doubles against Northern Arizona on day one of the Grand Canyon Invitational Hidden Dual. The tournament continues Saturday as the teams will shuffle opponents. UNM will also now face the Portland Pilots in either singles or doubles.
In singles, UNM got four wins, with Aram Noroozian taking a 6-4, 6-3 win over GCU’s Nikita Volonski in the lead singles slot. Georgia Samaha, plyaing at No. 2, won 6-4, 6-4 over David Wekesa. Samaha’s win was his eighth of the season, moving him into a tie for second on the team for the fall. Dario Ciobotaru had a chance to tay ahead, but he lost at the No. 3 position to Andrea Loizas 7-6, 6-4.
Nicolas Recoura grabbed his sixth win with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Brice Patoux, and Philip Bosin at No. 5 picked up arguably his best win of the season with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Jonathan Da Silva. Rounding out singles, GCUs Finbar McGarvey took down Connor Dils in a match of wild swings, winning 7-5, 0-6, 6-2.
In doubles, UNM took on Northern Arizona, and took two of three. Noroozian and Samaha, plaing together again, won easily 6-2 over Takumi Katsuda and Jakub Volesky. Dils and Bosin played as a freshman pair at No. 3 and win 6-4 over Ivan Parisic and Semen Agynskyy. UNM’s only loss was at No. 2 as Recoura and Ciobotaru lost 6-4 to Jakub Prachar and Piotr Galus
