Lobos Open Play in North Carolina at The Williams Cup
WILMINGTON, N.C. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began play at The Williams Cup on Sunday with the opening round at Eagle Point Golf Club. The Lobos shot 20-over during the opening 18 holes to sit in 13th place among the elite field.
A pair of top-10 teams, Arizona State and host North Carolina, were the only two teams to shoot under par during round one, with the Sun Devils at 3-under and the Tar Heels at 2-under.
David Davila shot the low round of the day for New Mexico with a 2-over 74. Clark Sonnenberg shot 77, Carson Herron shot 78, Alvaro Portillo shot 79 and Mesa Falleur shot 81 to round out the UNM lineup.
“Today was a tough opening round,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “When it comes to conditions and set-up, this golf course is set up like a national championship and it will exploit all your weaknesses. I felt like today we played hesitant and nervous, instead of confident and committed, knowing we are an elite team. We need to play with more confidence and swagger over the next two rounds.”
The Williams Cup continues Monday and concludes Tuesday at Eagle Point Golf Club.
