Lobos Drop Mountain West Opener
Laramie, Wyo. – The University of New Mexico’s swimming and diving program lost 186-112 to the University of Wyoming in their first Mountain West Conference dual meet of the season on Saturday. The Lobos (1-2, 0-1 MW) fell to the Cowgirls (1-0, 1-0 MW) for the third straight time, having last beaten them in the pool in the 2017-18 season. The Lobos have not defeated the Cowgirls in Laramie, Wyoming, since the 2002-03 season.
The Lobos won just three swimming events on Saturday, two of them coming courtesy of strong swims by their budding star freshman Ellie Broughton, who won the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.60) and also paced the field in the 400-yard individual medley (4:39.15). Broughton, who won three events in New Mexico’s season opening meet against Western Colorado on October 5th, has now placed first in five of her first six individual swimming events in her collegiate career.
Senior Katy McCarter was the other Lobo who won a swimming event in the meet, defeating her competitors in the 100-yard backstroke (58.43). This was McCarter’s third first-place finish in the young season.
Junior Isabella Gomez led the Lobos in the diving end of the pool, placing first off the 3-meter board (258.15) and second in the 1-meter event (250.80). New Mexico dominated in the 3-meter event on Saturday, as sophomore Alice English (251.10) placed second, and freshman Arianna Pelligra (241.58) placed third, to help keep the Lobos within reach of the Cowgirls.
New Mexico will return to the pool for their next dual when they host the University of Nevada for another Mountain West bout on November 9th.
