Kakhniuk/Recoura Advance to Semifinals
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Daniil Kakhniuk and Nicolas Recoura advanced to the Mountain West Qualifiers Semifinals with a hard-fought 8-6 win over Boise State’s Lukas Velik and Carson Baker to lead UNM on day two of the tournament. The winners of the singles and doubles titles will advance to the NCAA SIngles and Doubles championships, which are being competed for in the fall for the first time.
UNM had three singles competitors in the quarterfinals, but all three lost with two of the losses in three sets.
In doubles, Kakhniuk and Recoura will no face the No. 1 seeds from Nevada in Lucas Hammond and Youssef Kadiri, who beat San Diego State’s Mathieu Josserand and Alexander Mandma 8-7 (7-4).
In singles, Georgia Samaha lost in striaght sets 6-4, 6-4 to UNLV’s Illia Maksymchuk. Recoura fell to the top-seeded Sergi Mico Fellonar of Utah State 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) and Kakhniuk lost to No. 2 seed Arjun Kersten of Air Force 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
