Department Sets Across the Board GPA Records Again
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Just one semester after setting non-COVID record for highest single semester GPA, the Lobo student-athletes somehow beat that mark, establishing a record for a second straight semester. This time, the department’s student-athletes set marks for total GPA, male student-athlete GPA and female student-athlete GPA.
For the Spring 2024 semester, Lobo student-athletes recorded a non-COVID record 3.47 GPA, besting the previous mark of 3.41 last spring. Lobo male student-athletes recorded a non-COVID record 3.29 GPA, which also bettered the Spring 2023 GPA of 3.25. The Lobo female student-athletes recorded a non-COVID record 3.67 GPA after setting that mark last Fall.
The Spring 2020 semester in which campus was closed due to the COVID pandemic used a pass/fail grading system.
The 3.47 marked the 32nd straight semester that Lobo student-athletes turned in at least a 3.0 GPA, dating back to the fall of 2008. Overall, 92 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 or better GPA and 301 recorded a 3.0 or better GPA. Additionally, the 3.64 GPA for UNM’s female student-athletes marked the 28th straight semester with at least a 3.4 GPA and the 10th straight with a 3.5 GPA
The 3.25 GPA for UNM’s male student-athletes was the 24th semester in the last 25 with at least a 3.0 GPA and that GPA was bolstered by a record-setting GPA for the Lobo football team. In just the first semester under Bronco Mendenhall, the program turned in a 3.22 GPA, bettering the previous non-COVID semester record of 3.05 set last Spring. The 3.22 was even better than the COVID semester GPA of 3.10.
Football’s 3.22 GPA also represented the largest improvement for a single program from Fall to Spring for the department.
Seven programs turned in a top-five program GPA, softball setting an overall program record with a 3.63 GPA, joining football in that regard. It also marked the second straight semester the team recorded a program record GPA under coach Nicole Dickson. Women’s soccer had a non-COVID program record 3.89 GPA, giving the team a 3.8 or better in four straight semesters. Along with football, softball and soccer, baseball, men’s golf, and swimming & diving all recorded top-five program GPAs.
The women’s golf team, which has earned five consecutive Academic National Championships, recorded the best departmental GPA with a 3.96 GPA which amazingly doesn’t make the program’s list of top-five GPAs and the team has had 11 straight semesters of a 3.9 GPA or higher. The men’s golf team recorded a 3.86 to lead all men’s programs.
