Winning Streak Ends at 10 for Women's Tennis
BOZEMAN, Mont. — All good things must come to an end, and so for the Lobo Women’s Tennis team, that good thing was a season-opening 10-match winning streak. It ended in Bozeman as the Montana State Bobcats, a team just on the edge of the national computer rankings (much like UNM) edged UNM 4-3.
New Mexico does get to erase the memory of its first loss and stat a new streak as the team will host New Mexico State on Sunday at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium at 10 am.
The Lobos took the doubles point with a 2-0 sweep as Leonie Hoppe and Katherine Jhang won 6-3 at No. 1 and Mari Sodre and Hsuan Huang took a 6-4 win at No. 2. Up 1-0, singles started out all Montana State. With just four courts they bolted out to four opening set wins, and UNM was forced to chase from the start. That chase was valiant however. UNM ended up losing three of those first four matches, with only Katherine Jhang winning at No. 2, coming back for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win.
That meant UNM was down 3-2 and needed wins at Nos. 5 and 6, but Bente Vandeputte fell 7-5, 6-4 for the clincher for Montana State. Maria Sodre won her match with a 10-5 tiebreaker in the third set for the 4-3 final.
