Lobos Conclude Regular Season Saturday Night at No. 22 Utah State

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – The New Mexico men’s basketball team will conclude its regular season schedule Saturday night when it visits No. 22 Utah State. Game time in Logan is 6:30 pm and the game will air on CBS Sports Network and the Lobo Radio Network.

The game will be the Lobos’ sixth of the season against a ranked opponent, with a 3-2 record in those contests. The last time UNM won four games over teams ranked in the AP poll was 2012-13 (4-0 record that season).

The Lobos are 22-8 this season, 10-7 in the Mountain West, after a 79-58 victory over Fresno State on Wednesday during Senior Night at The Pit. The victory clinched UNM’s first winning season in conference play since the 2017-18 season. JT Toppin had 15 points and 16 rebounds in Wednesday’s game, his 10th double-double of the season, extending his Lobo freshman record.

Utah State is 25-5 overall and leads the Mountain West with a 13-4 record. Great Osobor leads the Aggies at 17.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, while Darius Brown II is second in the conference at 6.3 assists per game.

The game is a rematch of a Jan. 16 game at The Pit, when the Lobos upset the No. 16 Aggies 99-86, to snap Utah State’s seven-game win streak in the series. Nelly Junior Joseph had a season-high 26 points on 11-12 FGs to lead UNM to the win. The Lobos are looking to sweep a season series with two ranked wins for the first time since 2010-11, when they topped No. 9 BYU at home and No. 3 BYU in Provo on Jimmer Fredette’s senior night. UNM is also looking to snap a six-game losing streak in Logan with its first win at the Smith Spectrum since 2016.

The Lobos will travel to Las Vegas next week for the Mountain West Tournament. The event begins Wednesday, March 13, at the Thomas & Mack Center.
